Integrating Nearmap imagery into Autodesk® AutoCAD® Map 3D 2013 using WMS
These instructions apply to Autodesk® AutoCAD® Map 3D 2013 and describe how to load georeferenced Nearmap imagery using Web Map Service (WMS).
Rather than import a single image of a small area, WMS allows AutoCAD to request the imagery directly from the Nearmap server in a variety of map projections. WMS access is available on Nearmap business subscriptions only.
Please note that only certain versions of AutoCAD (Map 3D and Civil 3D) support this functionality. For standard versions of AutoCAD, you may be able to access WMS by using ESRI's ArcGIS for AutoCAD plugin, but we have not tested this at Nearmap.
To consume Nearmap imagery via WMS, you must authenticate using API Key Authentication.
The WMS URL you enter into your application must include your API Key. The WMS Links section of the above documentation describes how to copy the correct WMS URL, including your API Key, to the clipboard of your computer. Once you have done that, you can conveniently paste it into your application as required (see below).
Before loading Nearmap WMS imagery, set up an appropriate coordinate system
In the Civil 3D workspace view, from the Toolspace menu, click theSettings tab.
- Right-click on the Drawing name and select Edit Drawing Settings.
- If you want to take measurements from Nearmap imagery, select a distance-based coordinate system - for example, UTM zones or local grid systems.
- Click Apply, then OK.
Now load the Nearmap imagery
In the Planning and Analysis workspace view, click Connect.
Highlight Add WMS Connection.
At Server name or URL, enter the Nearmap WMS address including your API Key:
A list of available WMS layers should appear in the window. Some layers are nationwide, others cover single states, and others are a single aerial survey that began on the date specified. It's best to choose a single survey or state because locally optimal map projections are not available for nationwide survey layers.
First, check the box for the survey you're interested in. Next, select jpeg for the Image Format (this will dramatically increase performance and reduce data usage, at a small cost to quality). Then click the Server CS Code field to choose the map projection you want to use. The first on the list is usually most appropriate.
Click the Combine into one layer checkbox and click Add to Map. You may also want to check Cache WMS data to increase performance.
Your requested survey area should now be loaded.
Note: If the map does not appear to be loaded correctly, it may be that the coordinate system for the drawing is not set to the one downloaded. In that case, just reassign appropriately using the Coordinate System - Assign window.
As you zoom in, higher resolution imagery will be loaded on-demand. Please allow time for the imagery to download, as this may take a little while.
If you would like to take measurements with Nearmap imagery, follow these additional steps
In the command box at the bottom of the screen, type "UN" and pressEnter. The Drawing Units box appears - use this window to set appropriate measurement units.
At the command box, enter "MEA" and select the MeasureGeom tool with an appropriate option. You can now take measurements using Nearmap imagery. The measurements will be shown on screen.
